Greetings‚
Last Friday‚ I had the opportunity to connect with several organizations in the 1st Assembly District. My Senior Field Representative‚ Alice Bennett‚ and I started the day on a tour of KIXE‚ the North States public television station. KIXE Channel 9 has been serving the North State since 1954 and broadcasts to a 130 mile radius of Redding‚ including 10 counties. It was an important opportunity to discuss the significant role public broadcasting plays in providing crucial local programming and information to rural communities‚ particularly in times of disaster. Thank you to KIXE General Manager Dave Cox and his dedicated staff for their community building work.
I also had the pleasure of meeting with Kimberly Johnson‚ CEO of Children’s Legacy Center (CLC). This organization continues to do tremendous work‚ providing services for children and youth who have been impacted by abuse‚ neglect‚ or significant trauma. This organization partners with local governmental agencies to meet the needs of this population by providing trauma-informed interviews and forensic examinations‚ counseling services‚ and advocacy for the children they serve. I selected CLC as nonprofit of the year for the 1st Assembly District in 2020‚ and am grateful for their work in this space. The commitment of the CLC as a non-government agency partnering successfully with multiple government agencies and medical partners to provide services and support to children and extended families in a time of high need is inspiring. During our meeting‚ I was pleased to be able to share my plans to expand my 2021 bill that provided funding for sexual assault forensic exams to include cases of child abuse‚ which will increase access to these necessary exams.

Update from Nevada County Staff I am proud to share that Team Dahle’s very own staff member‚ Yolanda Cookson‚ was among the volunteers responding to the winter disaster in Nevada County over the past weeks. After the Governor declared a state of emergency‚ CAL OES and the Red Cross came in with supplies and staff to support the existing group of city staff‚ CDSS‚ local law enforcement‚ and community partners who had already been working together to respond to the needs of the community. At one point‚ nearly 20‚000 people were without power‚ but the shelter served as a warming center and overnight shelter‚ with food brought in for residents and even allowing animals to be there. We are grateful for our staff member’s selflessness and dedication to making a difference in the lives of those affected. My staff and I are continuing to monitor the situation‚ stay connected to local officials in the area‚ and offer support however we can. If you need to reach my office for any reason‚ you can do so here.
Touring River’s Edge Academy in Shasta County Last Friday‚ I toured River’s Edge Academy (REA) in Shasta County‚ a new in-custody commitment treatment and camp program that is a partnership of Shasta County Probation and Shasta County Office of Education. The REA provides local treatment options for youth‚ ages 14-17‚ and offers a safe and effective alternative to out of county placement that allows youth to remain in their community‚ staying connected to their pro-social and family support systems. Thank you to Chief Probation Officer Tracie Neal and Judy Flores‚ Shasta County Superintendent of Schools and their amazing staff for welcoming us in and explaining how this Academy is working to turn around the lives of local youth. Youth who are involved in the juvenile justice system are receiving personalized education programs designed to help them get back to or maintain grade level‚ as well as honing social emotional skills‚ relationship building‚ cooperation‚ basic life skills‚ and resilience. We were able to speak with staff and students who showed us the garden they grow and maintain throughout the year and the kitchen where they learn to prepare and cook that produce. They also showed us the baby chicks they were hatching to add to the chicken flock‚ which they tend‚ as well as their herd of goats. Learning to work with animals helps teach both responsibility and empathy. I was impressed by the dedication and hard work of the staff‚ and I am grateful for the opportunity to become more familiar with this innovative program.
Redding Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Business Awards Last Friday‚ I attended the Redding Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Legends and Leaders Gala. This event recognizes exceptional individuals in the business community‚ and my team and I attend every year to connect with business men and women and show our support. I want to congratulate all the 2023 award recipients‚ including the Rising Star Award Recipient‚ Blake Fisher of Viva Downtown Redding‚ Ambassador of the Year‚ Tessa Borquez of Alacrity Travel and Savor Shasta‚ Business of the Year‚ Nelson Family Dental‚ Businesspersons of the Year‚ Dave & Madona Silva of Professional Exterminators‚ and Citizen of the Year‚ Baron Browning. It was an inspiring event‚ and a great annual opportunity to connect with members of the business community in Shasta County.
