Whiskeytown Environmental School Community Named Nonprofit of the Year

Greetings,

I am thrilled to announce that the 1st Assembly District’s 2024 Nonprofit of the Year award recipient is Whiskeytown Environmental School (WES) Community!

Founded in 2011, WES Community is a dedicated nonprofit organization that supports the educational and scientific mission of Whiskeytown Environmental School (WES). In the wake of the devastating 2018 Carr Fire, WES Community stepped up as the official fundraising partner for the National Park Service at Whiskeytown, focusing on rebuilding and enhancing the school.

WES Community is committed to promoting immersive outdoor learning experiences that align with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Their hands-on science education programs foster a love for the environment and instill a sense of stewardship in our students.

Since 1970, Whiskeytown Environmental School has been a beacon of public outdoor education, offering K-6 students enriching 5-day overnight programs, 1-day programs, and week-long summer day camps. After temporarily closing due to the Carr Fire, WES triumphantly reopened in 2021 with daytime programming for K-8 students, continuing its legacy of providing exceptional science education and a profound connection to nature.

As someone who places a high value on education and providing opportunities for our students to learn and grow, I am especially proud to recognize WES Community. They generate essential funds to create unique opportunities for local students to explore and learn right here in our “backyard” at Whiskeytown Lake. This is a special chance not often available to students in more urban areas to experience hands-on, outdoor education. As a former attendee of WES Camp, I can attest to the impact it has on those who attend. The students of the 1st Assembly District are fortunate to have these enriching experiences at WES Camp, made possible by the dedicated efforts of organizations like WES Community.

I am proud to recognize WES Community as my Nonprofit of the Year because of their extraordinary efforts in making a lasting impact on our children and community. Their dedication to nurturing future generations of environmental stewards is truly inspiring.

Thank you for joining me in celebrating this outstanding organization. Learn more about them on their website or by watching our official Nonprofit of the Year video on YouTube.

Dignity Health Connected Living Food Bank Grand Opening

Shasta County Food Bank Expansion at Dignity Health Connected Living

This week, Team Dahle attended the grand opening of the newly expanded Dignity Health Connected Living food bank in Shasta County. This expansion, funded in part by a state grant, marks a significant enhancement for an organization that has supported our community for over 25 years.

The facility now includes a walk-in freezer, a new lobby, additional office space, and increased storage capacity. These upgrades, along with four new staff members, will help the food bank better serve children, seniors, and low-income families.

Executive Director Joe Ayer highlighted the pressing need for this expansion, noting that about 30% of people in our area face food insecurity. The new facilities will help meet this rising demand more effectively.

Plans are underway to further extend their programs into the community. More information is available on the food bank’s website for those interested in utilizing their services, learning more about the many programs they offer, or even volunteering.

Thank you to Dignity Health Connected Living for your dedication to our community!

Field Representative Yolanda Cookson Presentation

Nevada County Association of Realtors Fire Safe & Defensible Space Event

Team Dahle was honored to participate in the Nevada County Association of Realtors Fire Safe and Defensible Space event. The event featured insightful speakers, including Nevada County District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall, who discussed federal challenges, and Adam Weiss from Weiss Brothers Nursery, who shared tips on firewise planting. Grass Valley Fire Department Battalion Chief Christopher Armstrong provided an update on the local sales tax measure and advised homeowners on how to support fire personnel in defending their homes.

The presentations concluded with Conor Farrell from Home Hardening Solutions discussing fire hardening, Will Witzke from Witzke Family Insurance addressing current fire insurance challenges, and Laurel Housh from Disclosure Source educating buyers and sellers on transactions in fire zones.

As we enter the summer months, it is crucial that we prepare for wildfires and protect our homes and communities. Learn more about this important topic here.

Dolly Parton Imagination Library with Field Representative Yolanda Cookson

Mobile Office Hours in El Dorado County

Our district spans 11 counties, and with only two offices, it’s important for us to get out into the community to make it easier for you to connect with us. That’s why Team Dahle held a successful Mobile Office Hours at the Placerville Library for constituents in El Dorado and Amador counties.

We had in-depth conversations with several constituents about various issues in the district, including challenges with electric school buses, assistance with unemployment, and more. The Placerville Library staff were incredibly helpful, and we enjoyed stopping for a photo with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library poster on our way out, an initiative launched in 1995 that mails free, high-quality books to children. I was honored to support this initiative in 2022 when it made its way through the legislature in the form of SB 1183.

If you need assistance from our office, you don’t have to wait to speak to us in person. Visit my website to let us know what you need help with. We hope to see you out in the district soon!
