California Department of Fish and Wildlife & FISHBIO

This week Team Dahle attended a presentation by FISHBIO and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife on the collaborative pilot study for reintroduction of spring-run Chinook Salmon on the North Yuba River. This past winter the partnership installed and studied Rotary Screw Traps (RSTs) on the North Yuba River‚ which will be utilized to catch and count juvenile salmon once they have been spawned in the river.

The first trial of salmon egg implantation in predetermined locations suitable for spawning could begin as early as this year‚ funding dependent. The eggs will be sourced from the Feather River Hatchery‚ and studied for hatch and survival rates. Juveniles would be caught and transported below the Englebright Dam to fulfill their lifecycle. This is a historic opportunity to reintroduce Chinook Salmon after fish have not been in the river in decades and we were pleased to be part of this informative meeting.

Vikingsholm State Park Informational Tour

Team Dahle recently toured Vikingsholm State Park with State Parks District Superintendent Rob Griffith‚ Alex Neeb and Kaytlen Jackson of Sierra State Parks‚ Executive Director of the Sierra State Parks Foundation‚ Michael Myers‚ Heidi Doyle SSPF; Norma Santiago SSPF and Heidi Mayerhofer District Representative for Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil.

Vikingsholm is one of the best examples of Scandinavian architecture in the Western world. This home was built in the late 1920s by Lora Knight within the protective embrace of Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay. After Mrs. Knight passed away the home was ultimately purchased by Harvey West‚ a lumberman and philanthropist from Placerville. Mr. West eventually negotiated a deal to donate the home to the State of California if the state would pay half the appraised land value. That deal was struck and the California State Park system obtained Vikingsholm in 1953.

Like many state parks in California‚ Vikingsholm has some deferred maintenance issues. Legislative staff is working to understand the process for rehabilitation and improvement projects within our State Parks across the 1st Assembly District.
