Last week, I had the pleasure of attending an event hosted by the California County Superintendents. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the dedicated superintendents from our district and across the state who are committed to enhancing education for California’s students.
At the event, I was honored to receive the 2024 Educational Partner of the Year award. This recognition, based on nominations from all 58 county offices of education, is awarded to individuals who support county offices in their shared mission to increase student access and improve educational outcomes. I am grateful to have been selected for this award and am proud to continue representing our district and advocating for better educational opportunities for all students.
One example of our collaborative efforts is Assembly Bill 516, which I authored and was signed into law in 2021. This legislation, born from the 1st Assembly District, formally recognizes cultural ceremonies as excused absences in California’s education code. The ability to embrace one’s culture without concerns about unexcused absences or falling behind in school is truly invaluable. This success was made possible through the hard work of local education partners and my dedicated staff, who have been instrumental in addressing the unique needs of our students.
It takes all of us—educators, policymakers, and community leaders—working together to create lasting change. I am continually inspired by the commitment of our education leaders, and I look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to ensure every student has the support they need to thrive.

Celebrating Agriculture at the Siskiyou County Cattlemen’s Annual Tour
Agriculture is the backbone of California’s economy, and nowhere is that more evident than in the North State. Recently, my staff had the privilege of attending the Siskiyou County Cattlemen’s Association Annual Tour. This event brought together community members to connect and learn about the vital role that cattle ranching plays in our region.
The tour showcased the operations at Shasta Springs Ranch and Big Springs Ranch, giving a firsthand look at the hard work and dedication of local ranchers. Attendees enjoyed a BBQ lunch, followed by updates from industry leaders and recognition for outstanding contributions to the local cattle industry.
It’s always inspiring to see the collaboration and commitment of our agricultural community. I’m grateful for the work of the Siskiyou County Cattlemen’s Association and all who contribute to sustaining our local economy through agriculture. Thank you to the Siskiyou County Cattlemen’s Association, Siskiyou County Cattlewomen, Siskiyou County Cooperative Extension, and Siskiyou County EDC for their work in bringing the day together.
VIVA Downtown Upstate California Creative Corp Celebration
The arts have always played a crucial role in strengthening our communities, and the Upstate California Creative Corps is doing incredible work to ensure that creative professionals continue to inspire and engage. My staff recently attended an event in Shasta County, where we had the pleasure of recognizing VIVA Downtown, one of the many grantees using the Creative Corps grant to enrich the region with arts and culture.
This innovative grant program, funded by the state’s Creative Corps initiative, empowers artists to address key issues like civic engagement, social justice, and public health awareness. The impact of this investment is already being felt across North State communities, where local artists are bringing creativity and positive change to the forefront.

Firefighter Grant Program Now Open for Applications, Due 9/30
Our firefighters play a vital role in keeping our communities safe, and I’m pleased to share an important resource for them. Cal Water is now accepting applications for its 2024 Firefighter Grant Program, offering critical support to fire departments in their service areas. These grants can help offset the costs of essential equipment, training, and education—strengthening fire protection efforts across the state.
Since 2019, Cal Water has awarded over $854,000 in grants to local fire departments, funding everything from lifesaving rescue equipment to medical emergency supplies. Applications are open through September 30th, with recipients being notified later this fall.
