This Week: Fentanyl Bills Pass, Memorial Day and More

Greetings‚

As we enter the summer months‚ we are also entering county fair & rodeo season! Fairs and rodeos are important economic drivers of rural communities‚ especially. While providing family fun‚ food‚ and an instilling important appreciation for agriculture in our young people‚ our fair grounds also provide shelter and care during natural disasters, such as wildfires. Fairs are especially nostalgic for me having grown up with my grandfather who was the fair manager for over 40 years at the Intermountain Fair in McArthur.

Here is a list of fairs in the 1st Assembly District. Find them all here on my website or listed below. If you know of a fair in the 1st Assembly District that is not listed below‚ please respond to this email with the date‚ location‚ and website.

AB-957: Government Overreach & An Attack On FamiliesAB-957: Affirming Gender Identity Added to Factors Considered in Custody Arrangements

The California State Assembly recently passed AB-957‚ a deeply troubling proposed change to custody laws‚ adding a parent’s affirmation of their child’s gender identity to the factors considered by judges when deciding custody arrangements. This bill oversteps its boundaries and infringes upon the rights of parents. It is not the role of government.

It is crucial that we voice our concerns and opposition to this harmful legislation. This bill will soon be up for a vote in the State Senate. Take action by contacting California State Senators and the author of the bill to express your firm opposition to AB-957.

By making your voice heard‚ we can collectively defend the rights of parents to guide and nurture their children in accordance with their own beliefs and values. Learn more about AB-957 here.

Lassen Highschool GraduationLassen High School Graduation

Last Friday‚ June 9th‚ I had the incredible opportunity to provide the commencement speech at the Lassen High School Class of 2023 Graduation in Susanville. Thank you to Ethan Shaw‚ the Senior Class President‚ for extending the invitation to be a part of the ceremony.

Having lived‚ worked‚ and watched my own kids go through school in Lassen County‚ I truly understand the unique challenges and advantages that students in this area face. Growing up in a small town is something special‚ where teachers and community members know you personally.

To the amazing LHS Senior Class of 2023‚ I wish you all the best and encourage you to go out into the world‚ soak up knowledge‚ and return to your community with a renewed love and a determination to make a positive impact. I have no doubt that they will carry the spirit of their hometown with them wherever they go and use their experiences to shape a brighter future for both themselves and their beloved community.

Virtual Workshop on Catastrophe Modeling & InsuranceVirtual Workshop on Catastrophe Modeling & Insurance

On July 13‚ 2023‚ a virtual workshop will be hosted providing an opportunity to delve into the realm of catastrophe modeling and insurance. Hosted by the State of California Department of Insurance‚ this workshop aims to address the escalating risks posed by climate-intensified wildfires and their impact on California communities. The workshop will explore the use of risk management tools‚ specifically catastrophe models‚ to estimate catastrophe losses and enhance insurance rate approval processes. By incorporating these models‚ insurance policyholders and companies can better anticipate and mitigate potential losses caused by wildfires.

While this workshop is not a formal public hearing on proposed regulations‚ it offers a valuable platform for experts‚ academics‚ and stakeholders to share their insights and potential solutions. To participate‚ please register for the web-based virtual format using the provided link‚ here. Your contributions will help shape the future of insurance in California and foster resilience in the face of wildfire risks. For further information and to submit your comments‚ please reach out to CDIRegulations@insurance.ca.gov before July 12‚ 2023.
