I hope this newsletter finds you well. It’s been a busy week for me‚ filled with productive meetings and events. Here’s a recap of what my team and I have been up to in Sacramento:
One of the highlights of this week was the progress made on several of my bills. I’m excited to share that AB-1402‚ which focuses on medical evidentiary exam reimbursement‚ AB-336‚ addressing Workers Compensation Insurance‚ and AB-1722‚ supporting School Nurses‚ have all moved forward. I also received a letter of support from Superintendent of Public Instruction‚ Tony Thurmond‚ regarding my bill AB-715: Rural Education Task Force. This bill aims to address the unique challenges faced by rural communities in our education system. It’s encouraging to have the support of such an esteemed figure in education. I look forward to sharing more positive news about this bill in the near future.
In line with rodeo and fair season‚ Senator Dahle and I attended the California Cattlemen’s Association and California Cattlemen’s Foundation 42nd Steak and Eggs Breakfast in Sacramento. We had the opportunity to meet with ranchers from the 1st Assembly District and discuss their legislative needs and priorities. I also had the pleasure of meeting with Pam Loomis from Small Telephone Companies and Russ Elliott‚ the CEO of Siskiyou Telephone. We discussed legislation that directly impacts the 1st Assembly District. On the same day‚ my staff and I met with members from local Ag Councils. It was a fortunate coincidence that this meeting coincided with Ag Day in the district‚ which my staff attended. These interactions allowed us to gain insights into the agricultural industry and strengthen our ties with the local community.
This week‚ I also met with Sheriffs Jeremiah LaRue from Siskiyou County and Shannon Moon from Nevada County during their annual legislative day in Sacramento. Maintaining strong relationships with law enforcement is crucial for ensuring the safety of our district’s residents. Thank you to both Sheriff LaRue and Sheriff Moon for your constant collaboration with our office. In addition to these meetings‚ I dedicated a significant amount of time to committee work and voting on bills on the Assembly Floor. It was another busy week in the Assembly‚ filled with important discussions and decision-making.
To culminate the week‚ I hosted nearly a dozen California legislators on a Forestry Tour in Siskiyou County yesterday. This tour was an opportunity to educate legislators from urban communities about rural ways of life and the importance of forest management. It was a productive trip‚ allowing us to identify and appreciate the many benefits that forest management brings‚ benefits that residents of the 1st Assembly District know well.

 | District Update This week‚ our office organized two advisory group meetings‚ bringing together County Office of Emergency Services leaders and County Superintendents from various counties. We engaged in prolific discussions about the current challenges faced by our communities‚ explored ways in which our office can offer support‚ and talked about ideas for upcoming legislation benefiting the 1st Assembly District. Our Senior Field Representative‚ Alice Bennett‚ traveled to Siskiyou County to meet with Dunsmuir High School Superintendent and Principal‚ Ray Kellar‚ and Chief Business Officer‚ Kim Vardanega. The purpose of this visit was to discuss the issue of average daily attendance numbers and explore potential legislative solutions for funding in this area. We were highly impressed by the adaptability displayed by Dunsmuir High School’s administration‚ staff‚ and students in transitioning from in-person to distance learning during emergency situations like snowstorms. They estimated that around 70-80% of their students actively participated in online learning. Thank you to my staff and Dunsmuir High School staff for collaborating with our office on crucial matters related to education. Following this meeting‚ my staff also visited Jackson Middle School to present Certificates of Recognition in preparation for an upcoming school ceremony. (See photo) In addition‚ our Field Representative‚ Yolanda Cookson‚ attended the Gold County Broad for All‚ Digital Equity‚ and BEAD Planning Workshop on Friday‚ May 12th. This workshop provided an opportunity for partners to share information with the State of California‚ offer feedback‚ and contribute to the ongoing efforts aimed at achieving equity and access in Assembly District 1‚ as well as other underserved areas. The participants included representatives from the California Public Utilities Commission‚ Sierra Business Council‚ Gold Country Broadband Consortium‚ Sierra County‚ Nevada County‚ CalTrans‚ Nevada County Economic Resource Council‚ and the California Department of Technology. We are proud of the valuable connections and collaborative work taking place within our office to address important community issues. By actively engaging diverse stakeholders‚ we are committed to making a positive impact and fostering meaningful change in the 1st Assembly District.  | Minerva Scholarship We are thrilled to announce that the Women’s Caucus is once again offering its annual Minerva Scholarship program‚ helping deserving students achieve their educational dreams. This is the fourth consecutive year that we have offered this program‚ and we are excited to be continuing this tradition of empowering women through education. As of April 15‚ 2023‚ eligible students can submit their applications for the Minerva Scholarship program. The deadline for applications is May 31‚ 2023, at 11:59 pm‚ so be sure to mark your calendars and submit your application on time. The Minerva Scholarship program was created to provide financial support to deserving students‚ and we are proud to announce that this year‚ we will be awarding 108 scholarships to deserving female students‚ each worth $3‚000.  | Mosquito Fire: Deadline to Submit Physical Damage‚ 6/5 We want to inform you about an upcoming deadline that could provide vital assistance in repairing and rebuilding properties damaged by the Mosquito Fire in Placer County. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is offering low-interest federal disaster loans for businesses of all sizes‚ private nonprofit organizations‚ homeowners‚ and renters affected by the Mosquito Fire. The deadline to apply is June 5‚ 2023. Eligible areas include El Dorado‚ Nevada‚ Placer‚ Sacramento‚ Sutter‚ and Yuba counties in California‚ as well as Washoe County in Nevada. Businesses can borrow up to $2 million‚ homeowners can access up to $200‚000‚ and homeowners and renters can receive up to $40‚000 to repair or replace damaged property. SBA also offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to address working capital needs caused by the disaster. The deadline for these loans is January 4‚ 2024.
