Good afternoon-
Today‚ my staff and I toured the Redding Teen Center with Pathways to Hope for Children’s Executive Director‚ Michael Burke and Board Chair, Dr. Sean Dugan. The Teen Center was established earlier this year and serves teens ages 13-17 from the City of Redding and outlying areas. The center engages youth in activities which contribute to their growth into responsible and caring members of our community. Through the programs offered at the Center‚ teens learn to identify their strengths and build upon those strengths when making decisions and personal choices. The Redding Teen Center provides a second home to many youths in the Redding community‚ offering leadership‚ recreation‚ artistic‚ and educational programs‚ and activities.
Next‚ we toured the amazing new Shasta Office of Education Early Child Care Center which is in the process of completion and will host a ribbon cutting on October 18‚ alongside Shasta County Superintendent of Schools‚ Judy Flores and State Senate District Director‚ SD01, Bruce Ross. This center was the brainchild of Renee Menefee‚ Executive Director of the Shasta County Office of Education Early Childhood Services‚ who envisioned a child care center where families could receive a full range of supportive services in one space. The facility will be the first of its kind to provide child care‚ as well as access to assessments‚ early intervention‚ and monitoring for children with special needs. They will provide services to both students and families‚ such as mental health services and counseling for childhood classroom behavior‚ specialist assessments‚ and early intervention for children’s cognitive impairment‚ speech‚ and language delays.  | AD01 Education Earlier this week my staff met with Ray Witte‚ Director of Special Education for Mountain Valley JPA and Mike Freeman‚ Associate Superintendent-Instructional Services for Shasta County Office of Education to discuss JPA funding formula issues. Although session is out for the year‚ meeting with local leaders allows us to stay connected to our district and prepare next year’s bill package.  | Rainbow Fentanyl – Be Prepared This Halloween California and other states have recently been flooded with “rainbow fentanyl” by drug cartels aimed at selling this candy-colored pill to our youth. It is the latest alarming drug trend to hit the U.S. and is highly addictive and potentially deadly to our children. Drug traffickers even name the product “Sweet Tarts” or “Skittles” to emulate these real candy products. With Halloween right around the corner‚ it’s important for parents to talk to their kids about how dangerous this drug is. Rainbow fentanyl is just the latest risk to our ongoing opioid crisis and it’s critically important that our children are educated about this rising threat. According to the Department of Public Health‚ fentanyl-related overdose deaths by people ages 10-19 have skyrocketed in recent years. In response to this crisis‚ earlier this year I supported Assembly Bill 2365‚ which creates a grant program to fund fentanyl awareness‚ outreach‚ and investigations related to fentanyl overdoses. This new law will provide another tool to keep this dangerous drug away from our kids and young adults. Stay safe! |
 Photo: New York Times (article linked to right) | Devil’s Garden Colt Challenge Applications for the 2023 Devil’s Garden Colt Challenge are now open! This program places a young wild horse from the Devil’s Garden Wild Horse Territory with youth 9-19 who are enrolled in 4-H or FFA in California. Youth utilize mentorships to complete ground training with their wild horses and will compete for over $3000 in prizes in June 2023. Check out this FAQ for more information. The application is open until October 28th. Recently‚ the New York Times printed an article about the DG Colt Challenge with lots of amazing photos of the 2022 Colt Challenge.
