Good afternoon –
We are in the final two weeks of session. My staff and I have invested hours preparing for the bills we heard on the floor this week‚ while also making time to travel throughout the district and connect with you. Here are a few highlights from this week at the Capitol:
- AB 2514‚ a bill I authored to address funding gaps for transportation needs in rural schools‚ has moved forward on the Senate side. Rural roads and highways are often overlooked when it comes to adequate road and highway funding. In a district as large as ours‚ rural roads are heavily impacted by chronic wildfires‚ and the emergency vehicles used to fight fires‚ which is where the idea for AB 2514 originated.
- I have been asked to be the Floor Manager for California’s Imagination Library‚ a project that is moving forward thanks to SB 1183‚ a bill I eagerly supported as the Vice Chair of the Assembly Education Committee. Launched in 1995‚ Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free‚ high-quality books to children from birth to age five‚ no matter their family’s income.
- As a proud co-author of ACR-152‚ I was pleased to see it pass on the Assembly Floor earlier this week. ACR 152 designates September 25‚ 2022 as Gold Star Mothers & Families Day. The history of Gold Star Families began in the United States shortly after World War I to provide support for mothers who lost sons or daughters in the war. Learn more about ACR-152 here.
With session concluding on August 31st‚ I will continue to update you on important legislative decisions affecting the 1st Assembly District.

 | Wildfire Survey Because the 1st Assembly District has been so heavily impacted by wildfire‚ last month my team and I mailed out a survey to give you an opportunity to share how you have been impacted by wildfires. We want to know what challenges you still currently face and what solutions would benefit you the most so I can continue to fight for what you need in Sacramento. We have received hundreds of responses to date and expect to see even more come in next week. Thank you to each of you who took the time to respond. If you have not yet received the survey in the mail‚ or if you prefer to fill out a digital version‚ you can do so here. |
 | Visiting Grass Valley & Loyalton This week‚ while I was in session‚ my staff attended an educational luncheon and tour of the Bright Futures for Youth facility‚ in Grass Valley‚ which houses 3 programs; The Friendship Club‚ NEO‚ and SAFE. The event educated attendees on how the Elevate Youth California grant from Proposition 64‚ the legalization of cannabis‚ is helping support children and young adults in Nevada County‚ including youth experiencing homelessness. Executive Director‚ Diana Gamzon‚ from the Nevada County Cannabis Alliance and a variety of community stakeholders were present for the event and expressed sincere admiration and support for the efforts of the organization. The following day‚ my staff attended the California Department of Fish and Wildlife public meeting for the Smithneck Creek Wildlife Area in Loyalton. The meeting was attended by Supervisor Sharon Dryden‚ Sheriff Mike Fisher‚ and RCD Chair Rick Bernardi as well as over 50 interested community members. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife addressed concerns raised by the community and assured members their ideas and input are greatly appreciated and needed for the safety of the overall community and area. Further communications will continue between the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the surrounding community of Loyalton‚ and talks of forming a working group to help educate and understand the desires of the community were well received. |
