Good afternoon‚
At the beginning of this week‚ the revised State Budget was up for a vote on the Assembly Floor. Here’s an overview of why I voted “no” on this version
PROS:
- Increased funding to California’s education system‚ which is much needed.
CONS:
- Does not address California’s statewide drought or water storage
- Does not address inevitable rolling blackouts
- Does not address the gas tax or provide Californians much needed relief from record high inflation
- Does not address California’s disastrous wildfires and their vast statewide devastation
Conclusion?
There are far too many unresolved issues for this budget to be moving forward. On average‚ families in California are spending $8,000+ more for the same amount of goods this year compared to last year. We have nearly a $100 billion budget surplus in California‚ yet state coffers continue to grow as Californians’ bank accounts dwindle. Californians need solutions‚ and this budget does not give them that.

 | AB 2728 – Penalties for *Unlawful* Cannabis Activity This year I co-authored AB 2728 with Assemblymembers Smith and Mathis‚ which received unanimous support in the Assembly last month. AB 2728 would create a gradation in the civil penalty structure for unlicensed cannabis activity‚ allowing these penalties to be tied to the size and scale of the unlicensed cannabis operations. Put simply‚ this bill aims to help those who are legally operating in the cannabis industry by creating greater penalties for those who are not. I am pleased to be part of legislation that works toward solving these complex and challenging issues. This is just the beginning.  | AB 2337 – Frontier Schools After AB 2337 received another unanimous vote of support from the Senate Education Committee‚ I am pleased to share it passed on the Senate Floor earlier this week. Next stop… the Governor’s desk! If you’ve missed my previous write ups about AB 2337‚ this bill would ensure California’s smallest, rural school districts receive proper recognition by defining Frontier School Districts in the California Education Code. This will help level the playing field‚ allowing California’s smallest schools to have a better chance at funding opportunities and‚ subsequently‚ providing better education opportunities for our students. |
 | California State Parks Week Did you know California has 279 state parks? This year‚ California is celebrating our first ever State Parks Week‚ from June 14th – 18th. Modeled after National Parks Week‚ this new annual event is a celebration of the diverse cultural‚ places‚ and history our state has to offer. The 1st Assembly District – the largest geographical district in California – is home to 10+ state parks. Of the nine counties in AD01‚ five contain one or more state parks.
