Yesterday marked the return of an important event held at the Capitol every year‚ California Ag Day.
This event‚ held during National Ag Week each year‚ highlights the importance of the agriculture industry and the utility it provides our great state. California’s agriculture is a multi-billion dollar industry‚ employing hundreds of thousands of Californians. Our state is home to tens of thousands of farms and ranches‚ and over a third of the country’s vegetables and two-thirds of the country’s fruits and nuts are grown in California.
At the event‚ my team and I connected with representatives from various sectors of agriculture‚ such as fresh cut florals‚ California FFA‚ the California Cattlewomen‚ and more. One of my favorite stops was with Sophie‚ an eleven year old who wrote a book inspired by agriculture. Of course I picked up a copy for myself and I was sure to have her sign it. I love seeing our youth express interest in this field. Being successful in this industry requires strength, innovation‚ and hard work‚ so it is important that our kids appreciate what it takes to grow food and put it on the table.
Another noteworthy stop was at the California Fairs Alliance booth. The first Assembly district is home to over a dozen county fairs. Fairs are a vital part of our communities. Across the state‚ they create tens of thousands of jobs‚ billions in revenue‚ and stimulate local economies. The fairgrounds themselves are a vital resource in times of disaster‚ as well. This year‚ I’m supporting these efforts by joining the Chair of the Joint Committee on Fairs Allocation and Classification on a letter requesting a one-time $50 million General Fund appropriation to support the Network of California Fairs.
Being from a farming family myself‚ I am proud to be part of the industry that feeds our nation. Happy National Ag Week, North State!

 | Woman of the Year I am pleased to share that my team and I have selected the 2022 Woman of the Year for the First Assembly District‚ Terry Oestreich. Terry is a dedicated educator and has served Plumas County Schools for 24 years. She was instrumental in helping staff‚ students‚ and their families during the Dixie Fire when they were displaced due to evacuations. Terry successfully navigated two major disasters at once – the Dixie Fire and the COVID-19 Delta variant surge – to meet the education needs of her students. When one of their schools burned down in the Dixie Fire‚ she played a vital role in getting her students quickly plugged into a neighboring school. Terry will be retiring from her long and rewarding career in June and will treasure the opportunity to spend time with her wonderful family‚ including her five grandchildren.  | Farm Bureau Members from the District Last week‚ California Farm Bureau members from the district were in Sacramento for their Annual Legislative Advocacy Day. I had the opportunity to connect with them to discuss a multitude of challenges facing the industry such as water policy‚ drought, rising cost of fuel and its impact on agriculture commodities‚ supply chain issues‚ and more. The agriculture industry is vital to California‚ and especially to the first Assembly district. As a dry land wheat farmer myself‚ I understand these challenges better than anyone and I value opportunities to partner with the hard-working people in agriculture. | Sushi Competition I recently attended the first “Circle of Life” reception since 2019‚ hosted by the California Rice Commission. It was great to be back at this event in person to support California’s agriculture community… and it was even better to take home first place in the Capitol Roller Competition. Thanks to the talented Bill Ngo of Kru Restaurant for his expert guidance on sushi rolling! This event was a great way to educate the community on the value of California’s rice industry. For example‚ our state supplies virtually all of America’s sushi rice‚ provides jobs for more than 250k people in California‚ and food for nearly 230 species of wildlife.
